Tibooburra

Gold was discovered in 1881 in Tibooburra. This was the reason why this town had a population of more than 2000 miners. The goldfields of Tibooburra were relatively poor and most of the miners leave the town about 30 years later.

Today Tibooburra is service centre for the surrounding pastoral properties with about 100 people living there. In Tibooburra there a two general stores, two hotels, petrol stations, hospital and a school. If you like to camp you can do it on the campground within the town or on a camping area just 1 km north of Tibooburra (Dead Horse Gully), already in the Sturt National Park.

The town is also known as the hottest town of New South Wales. You can get there via Cameron Corner and the Sturt National Park or via Broken Hill on the Silver City Highway. The main attraction of Tibooburra is the Sturt National Park (also see 'Sturt National Park' in the topics). The headquarters is located on Briscoe Street.

About 40 km south of Tibooburra on the Silver City Highway you will reach Milparinka which once was another mining town with three hotels, four stores, school, police station and court house. Nowadays, only the court house and a pub are left. About 12 km west of Milparinka you will reach Depot Glen, where the explorer Charles Sturt and his party were stranded in 1845.

I've been in Milparinka several times to stop and have a cold drink and something to eat. Last time, when I've been there in March 2001, the pub was closed. So check out, before heading to Milparinka.
