Mungo National
Park covers most of an ancient dry lake bed on the plains of western
NSW.
The
park lies 110 km north-east of Mildura and 150 km north-west of
Balranald on the Arumpo-Ivanhoe Road, As all roads in and around Mungo
can become impassable due to rain, it is advisable to check road
conditions before going to Mungo.
A Visitor centre is located near the entrance to the park. A stop at the
centre will enable you to learn about Mungo‘s natural and cultural
history before you explore the park. A
60 km signposted track takes you on a round trip across the lake floor
to the ‘Walls of China‘, over die dune to the Mallee
country, then around the north-eastern shore
of the lake. Picnic facilities, located at
several points along the drive, are shown on the map.
A visit to the
‘Walls of China‘ is a must. Here you can walk back in time through the
layers of the dune. Climb to the top of the drifting sands for a
spectacular view across the lake floor. A
visit at sunset or
sunrise is especially evocative, Remember that
all Aboriginal artefacts are protected by law, so don‘t pick up or
remove any that you may see.
Basic
facilities, which include pit toilets, tables and fireplaces, are
provided in the camping areas near the Arumpo Road park entrance and at
Belah Camp off the drive tour. Please bring your own water.
