Kalgoorlie-Boulder

It was in 1893 when Paddy Hannan, an Irish prospector, found gold in the area, which is now known as Kalgoorlie. The gold rush that followed was staggering in size. Men came from all over the world and many mining companies were established. Soon, the Goldfields became the economic and political centre of Western Australia.

Within a few years the population in the area had grown so rapidly that two towns had been established. Kalgoorlie (originally called Hannan's) and Boulder. But after the World War I increasing production costs and low gold prices led to Kalgoorlie’s slow decline.

In the mid-70s with increasing gold prices Kalgoorlie again became the largest producer of gold in Australia. Large open-cut mines are the production-methods used today. The Super Pit is one of the biggest open-cut mines in the world.

Today there are about 33.000 people living in Kalgoorlie-Boulder which is the second largest city in Western Australia.

It is worth to spend some days in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to learn about the history and about gold mining. There are many attractions to see e.g. the Goldfields Museum, Super Pit (the open-cut mine) or Hannans North historic Mining Reserve.

I recommend visiting the tourist information on Hannan Street (simply called on Hannan's) to get all the information you need. The tourist information has opened 7 days a week, except Christmas day. I have added two links to websites with further information about Kalgoorlie-Boulder below.
