Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges stretch
about 400 km from Mt Remarkable in the south to the Strzelecki Desert in the
north and are a spectacular highlight in South Australia. Although the Flinders
Ranges are part of the arid regions of South Australia, the vegetation is
diverse and colourful.
There is a lot to do and to see
in the Flinders Ranges. Before heading to the Ranges, the best would be to get
further information about the Flinders Ranges at the Tourist Office in Port
Augusta, Hawker, Quorn or Wilpena. Bushwalking is a great way to experience the
Gorges, fauna and flora. It's a good idea to stay in the Flinders Ranges for
some days. Then there's enough time to visit the Flinders Ranges National Park
and the Gammon Ranges National Park. Mt Remarkable National Park is part of the
Southern Flinders Ranges district.
The Flinders Ranges are easy to
reach. Starting in Adelaide it's an easy day trip to get there via Port Augusta
to Hawker. All the way is sealed. The road from Hawker to Wilpena is sealed too,
but further on all the roads are Gravel Roads.
There are many camping grounds
in the Flinders Ranges National Park and the Gammon Ranges National Park as
well. If you like to have more comfort, you can stay on the Caravan Parks in
Hawker, Wilpena or Quorn. In most towns of the Flinders Ranges Caravan parks can
be found. If you camp in the bush, be sure to be totally self-supplied.
There are three very
interesting National Parks in the Flinders Ranges area: Flinders Ranges National
Park, Gammon Ranges National Park and Mt Remarkable National Park (near Port
Augusta). All these parks offer many activities and are perfect for bushwalking
and camping. The Flinders Ranges are already part of the remote part of South
Australia. So be sure to carry enough water with you, when visiting the National
Parks.
