4WD -
Car Rental
You should have planned
your trip before you start. All tours described here are Outback-Tours and
you normally need a 4WD. If you've planned to travel a longer time, you
should think of buying a car. On the other hand you might want to rent a 4WD.
Most of the car-rental
stations don’t allow going on unsealed roads (Gravel Roads) with a "normal"
car or a campervan.
A good insurance is
important when driving on unsealed roads and I recommend a Complete Cover
(CC) insurance.
It's important to know how
to drive a 4WD and to drive on unsealed roads. This is more important for
tracks with a high degree of difficulty. Beginners should go on easy tracks
for the first time, for example the Oodnadatta-Track.
Notice: Of course,
car rentals of 4WD want to earn money too. Unfortunately security has not
always the first priority. So the tools, you find in 4WD are often not
suitable, when you need them. A missing shovel, bad tyres and no radio set
for emergency are other examples. You should check everything very
carefully, when picking up the car.
Because of the tragic accidents that happened in the past most 4WD rentals
offer to hire an emergency beacon. I think this beacon is the minimum you
should have with you. Only a very few rental-companies have this beacon
included.
